This is such a bitter pill to swallow. But the “make me safe” strategy is one that hands power over and leaves one in a “prey” or perpetual victim state dependent on external protection.
It also sets the protector up as either savior or perpetrator.
The people who feel better relying on external forces for safety generally have an aversion to responsibility and are quick to blame without considering their participation.
You can even see this in religious people who turn and hate God of life doesn’t go as they wanted. They feel betrayed.
What I see in the world today is a chasm in values. Those who view safety over sovereignty .
Someone said recently I never criticize the far right. And thought, do I need to? Isn’t it obvious?
The projection of one’s morality onto the behavior of others is a different version of this. It’s saying “I’m not ok unless you act in accordance with my values.”
This occurs on both political extremes.
Lack of respect for how people wish to live and extreme othering.
One uses weaponized victimhood, the other uses moral outrage. Both justify their positions by claiming they will not be safe or ok as long as the other is the way they are or behaves the way they behave.
The perfect players in a never ending saga.
Manufactured fear.
Manufactured calls for outsourcing safety.
Personally my belief is that self protection, personal responsibility, and sovereignty are the highest values. It makes me responsible for myself and being ok regardless of the behavior or others. Being responsible for my space, my body, my immediate family. Not everyone may share that.
I actually find that people who believe they are responsible for everyone are extremely presumptuous that this is desired. They believe they are being “good” people and they play that part.
My experience is that people who don’t share my values seek to make mine (and others) wrong, problematic and dangerous. They seek to educate- whether it’s because they believe I’m an evil person who supports infanticide, or because I won’t participate in social justice dogma. Sovereignty is only perceived as dangerous to someone who doesn’t feel safe within themselves.
